Inside Snack is an independent trade newsroom covering convenience stores, fuel retail, and travel centers. We report the industry the way operators run it — from the pump and the cooler, not from a keynote slide.

Who we are

Inside Snack is a commercial news organization for the convenience and fuel retailing industry. We publish staff reporting, analysis, and primary-source data for the people who run stores, buy categories, price fuel, and sell into the channel.

The title is independent. It is not a show daily, a supplier newsletter, or a reprint of a corporate newsroom. Staff stories carry a byline and a date. Government series are cited to the issuing agency. Press material is labeled as press. Corrections are published on the story with a dated note.

The beat is the curb: fuel, nicotine, foodservice, and the chain moves that show up first at the lot. Facings and cooler-set merchandising are a different trade. This desk stays on the operator P&L.

Beats

  • Fuel & energyWeekly retail gasoline and diesel, renewable diesel, EV as a P&L question, and rack-to-pump language in public filings.
  • FoodservicePrepared food and dispensed beverage programs that fit a 2,800-square-foot box or a travel-center kitchen.
  • Tobacco & nicotineCompliance, fixtures, age-gating, and what can still be sold in the states a chain actually operates.
  • Store operationsLabor, planograms, payments, SNAP, and the merchandise mix that has to turn in a small box.
  • Chains & M&AStore counts, banner maps, same-store sales, and the deals that show up first in an 8-K.
  • DataEIA, FDA, FSIS, SEC, and USDA FNS — presented as a working board, not a decorative widget.

Who we write for

Operators of convenience stores and travel centers. Category managers and fuel buyers. Jobbers and petroleum marketers. CPG and foodservice teams who sell into the channel. Trade-show organizers, lenders, and advisors who need the same facts the operator uses.

We assume the reader already knows what a facing is, what a PADD is, and why inside sales and fuel margin are not the same line. We do not write consumer explainers. We write the industry read before the next order cycle.

How the newsroom works

A staff story is reported or analyzed by a named editor, bylined on this site, and based on primary documents, on-the-record comments, or original observation. We do not put a staff byline on a rewritten press release.

The public record is part of the desk. Weekly EIA retail gasoline and diesel averages, FDA and FSIS recalls, SEC filings for public c-store and travel-center chains, and USDA SNAP retailer data are cited, dated, and kept next to the reported files. A number that moved should be on the page the same week an operator has to price off it.

Advertising and sponsored content, if accepted, are labeled. Editorial staff do not sell ads. We apply for trade-show media credentials as working journalists covering the convenience and fuel retailing industry.

Leadership

Darik Chandler is editor. He covers convenience retail, fuel, travel centers, and the chain moves that show up first at the curb. His desk work starts from primary sources — EIA weekly averages, SEC filings, FDA and FSIS recalls, and Federal Register rules — then follows what those numbers mean for operators.

Priya Shah covers foodservice. Jordan Hale has fuel and energy. Cole Brennan has nicotine and compliance. Lena Voss keeps the government series on the board. The kitchen and the curb are not covered as two industries.

The NACS year

We cover the NACS Show and the convenience and fuel retailing industry year-round. Show coverage is assigned in advance — fuel, foodservice, nicotine, operations, and one data file — and published on this site within 90 days of the event, earlier when the floor produces a fact operators can use the following week.

The show is not the brand. The year-round desk is the brand. Credentials, assignment letters, and the masthead are on the press kit.
